THE IMPORTANCE OF ORIGINAL ARTWORK

Original artwork is at the heart of Creative Matters – it’s what we are known for, it’s what we like doing most, and it’s what we do best. We nurture this skill in our team at regular Art Days where we leave our computers behind and gather together to create based on a theme or technique. Designing, whether it be for custom projects or our own rug collections, is a meticulous process where we rise to every challenge. As an example, the rug in the attached photos needed to harmonize with the existing mural on the wall of the living area. We recognized immediately that we would need to match not only the colours but also the brushwork.

Creative Matters designer Sophie Williams painted the enchanting mural in the house a number of years ago. Later, when she was working at Creative Matters, the client requested a rug to provide graceful continuity with the mural. Photography: Simon Tanenbaum

What Contributes to our Creativity

  • the Creative Matters designers have a wide range of training (from eight different countries) and experience. As well as textile design, they trained in: fashion design, fine arts, art history, industrial design, graphic design, architecture, and interior design

  • Art Days allow the designers to expand their skills together which leads to exciting design ideation

  • usually, the designers use their digital skills to transform artwork to rug production formats, but sometimes they begin with art materials and go analog, using a brush or pen on paper

  • all the designers are highly skilled in colour selection and are trained to see subtle differences, consequently curating beautiful harmonious palettes

  • while one designer may lead a project, collaboration is key to Creative Matters’ success and many others will be invited to share their suggestions
